Dhaka, Feb 16 (UNB) – Two centuries by opener U Tharanga and K Gunawardna enabled holders Sri Lanka to earn an emphatic 234-run victory over United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Grameen Phone ICC/ACC Under-17 Asia Cup Cricket tournament at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium here today (Friday). The Lankans batted first after wining the toss and posted a huge total of 344 runs for five wickets in 45 overs. Later, they bundled out the World Cup playing UAE very cheaply for 110 runs in 29 overs to record their second consecutive win in the tourney. Going to bat first, the two openers gave a solid foundation to the Lankan innings contributing 222 runs in 28.3 overs in the opening stand. Opener U Tharanga hammered 104 runs off 90 balls with 15 boundaries while another opener K Gunawardna added 120 runs off 102 balls with 17 fours to be adjudged man of the match. VR Thomas was the most successful UAE bowler to claim three wickets for 62 runs while Imran Butt and Wasim took one wicket each giving away 9 and 59 runs respectively. Wasim (not out 27), Imran Butt (26), opener Amir Hussain (14), Menon (13) and Thomas (12) were the notable UAE batsmen who reached double figures. I Dilshan of Sri Lanka grabbed three wickets for 15 runs while R Nishan and T Perera took two wickets each conceding 7 and 16 runs respectively. In the day’s other match at BKSP ground in Savar, Pakistan managed a face-saving 23-run victory over upcoming Nepal. Sent in to bat first, Pakistan were all out for 180 in 42.3 overs with number six batsman Suleman Kadir scoring team highest 52 runs off 50 balls that included three fours and two sixes. Later, Suleman was adjudged man of the match. Pakistan captain Salman Butt, who opened the innings, scored 39 runs off 47 balls that featured six fours while number five Javed Hossain made 29 off 37 balls with four hits across the rope. Manjeet Shreshta of Nepal captured three wickets for 35 runs in nine overs while Basant Regmi took two for 36 runs. Replying to a poor total, the Himalayan Kingdom team opened their innings cautiously, but was dismissed for 157 runs in 44.1 overs. Opener Manik Shreshta contributed team highest 25 runs. Other notable scorers for Nepal were Kaniska Chougai (22), Basant Regmi (21), Prem Chowdhury (16) and Dineph Khatri (16). Azhar Ali was the most successful among the Pakistani bowlers to grab four wickets for 55 runs while Azam Hossain took two for 34 runs. Meanwhile, the Indian team reached the capital today (Friday) to take part in the tourney.
